My Favorite Restaurants

"Greg's Kitchen"
PATTAYA, THAILAND

Summary

Who says the English can't cook? They certainly can, and the proof can be found at Greg's Kitchen in Pattaya, run by chef Greg Sulis. Formerly a chef in London, Greg has relocated to Thailand and opened his own restaurant which features homemade English and International food, including some wonderful meat pies.

The surroundings are pleasing, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Everyone is given a cold towel (pa yen) upon arrival, a touch of hospitality that I particularly enjoy and look for. The service is prompt and friendly. In fact, Greg has a sign promising three "G's": Good food, Good service, and Generous portions, and his promises were certainly kept.

By the way: thanks to Randy Wichgers for taking me to Greg's the first time. A great find, Randy!

Menu Favorites

Everything our party sampled over several days was simply excellent, so I believe that everyone will find something to their taste. Here are several items that I particularly enjoyed:
  • Full English breakfast, with bacon, sausage, eggs, grilled tomatoes, potatoes, beans, toast, coffee or tea, and orange juice. For 110 baht this meal is both filling and affordable, two attributes which I love to enjoy simultaneously!
  • Cornish pasty, which is a meat, potato and vegetable pie. It comes with potatoes, peas, and carrots, and I could not eat it all. At 175 baht, a very satisfying meal. The pie crust was especially nice and very welcome, as few cooks in Thailand are able to achieve the delicate balance of ingredients and preparation necessary to produce an excellent crust.
  • Roast pork dinner, which comes with potatoes and vegetables. Excellent food.
  • Various Thai dishes are also available, from farang favorites (like fried chicken with cashews) to lesser-known dishes loved by the locals. Everyone who tried it liked the Thai food, including several Thais, so I think you should feel free to select from the entire menu, confident of good food.
Sadly, I was so full that there was no room to try Greg's apple pie, but at this writing I'm already planning to stop by for a snack and test Greg's rendition of this personal favorite.
